A Rogue in Londinium

Written and Directed by Whitney Hamilton, Produced by Patrick Sullivan, Whitney Hamilton and Thom Milano

Richard Rhys, a painter with a checkered past and insatiable hedonism finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Because he is recorded having a row with a prostitute and subsequently killing her on this new innovation called cinema, his guilt is sealed in the public’s eyes. The women around him are powerful even in Victorian times. The gender roles seem to reverse as the story progresses and the heroine, Victoria Thornton, a wealthy London socialite, rescues Richard from certain arrest and execution by arranging his escape to New York City. Because she loves him, she believes in his innocence...

Gustav Courbet - The Metropolitan Museum of Art (ended 5/18/08)

One of the most enjoyable exhibits I've seen in a long time. It is evident what a powerhouse and maverick this painter was. He preceded, or could be called one of the first impressionists. He certainly influenced an entire movement in art with his technique and style. His use of paint as light is intrumental in the evolution of painting, his own and those who followed. The landscapes are pretty and certainly well executed, however they do not capture the same drama as his self-portraits and scenes of peasant people as well as the hunting paintings. Monet acheived drama in landscapes. Most of the landscape paintings left me yearning for more. The thing I learned from seeing Courbet's work in person is the economy in brush strokes to get to a somewhat finished rendering.
